The Crib

For my first big project, I am going to build a crib for first child.  Actually it’s a transition bed.  It will start as a crib, then transition to a toddler bed, then to a full sized bed.  I’m pretty excited about it.  It may be a bit ambitious for my first large project, but i think I can handle it.

Overview:

  • I found the project plan online.  It was free from some site at some point.  The plan says woodonline.com, but I’m not sure that’s where I got it.
  • I won’t be following the plan exactly.
    • It calls for maple.  I will be using quarter sawn white oak white ash.
    • The plans also call for some parts to be made from maple plywood.  The pieces that are supposed to be 3/4″ plywood I will be making out of solid wood.
    • The plans also call for plywood ends.  I’m going to replace that with more slats like the front and back.  It seems to be the way of things with cribs right now.

Notes:

  • 2010-01-19 – I finally have wood!  It’s not quarter sawn white oak like I had planned.  Turns out the places that have it want too much for it.  The places that don’t want too much for it don’t have it.  And I’m running out of time.  So, I’m going with white ash.  Read more here.
  • 2010-01-24 – I started to mark out all of the pieces, a bit big, on the lumber tonight.  It’s going to take me a couple nights!
  • 2010-01-27 – It took me three nights to get all the parts marked out.  It was a fun little puzzle.   Read more here.
  • 2010-01-30 – Today I rough cut all of the pieces.  I made a lot of saw dust.  Read more here.
  • 2010-01-31 – The wood is all stickered up in the basement.
